Safety Advice for Fishing from Beaches / Rocks along the Coast
The following advice is provided as a guide to keeping safe while fishing from beaches / rocks along the coast:
- Endeavour to go fishing in a group of 2 or more - or go to an area where you would expect other anglers to be.
- Ensure that someone not on the fishing trip knows where you intend to go and roughly how long you will be away. If possible, take a mobile phone with you
- For longer fishing trips ensure that you have enough food and drink to sustain you
- Plan your fishing trip along the coast - take time to find out the time of sun rise, sun set, high tide, low tide and the weather forecast. All these elements can have a significant impact on the conditions for your fishing trip.
- Take particular care if your route is via a beach or cove - ensure you know the tide times so you won’t be cut off
- Take particular care when paths, grass, timber and/or natural stone is wet as these ground surfaces can be very slippery. Please dress for the terrain and the weather.
- Take special care of children and pets if they are on the fishing trip with you
- Do not attempt a fishing trip beyond your fitness level.
- The following is recommended in terms of appropriate safety equipment for a fishing trip to a coastal area:
- A lifejacket
- Footwear with good foot/heel protection and non-slip soles
- Light but warm / rain resistant clothing
- In an emergency dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
- If someone is washed into the ocean
- Don't jump in after them
- Look for a throw line, lifebuoy or something that floats and throw it to the person in the water
- Dial 999 on your mobile phone and ask for the Coastguard or go for help
